Notes Knit on my Brother 260 as a test for my version of the shaded aspen leaf sweater by Elizabeth Zimmermann. Funny, it looks a bit like another Elizabeth Zimmermann design: the pillbox, which I only realized afterwards. Felted the hat slightly afterwards in the wasdryer. This opens the rather course Eville wool nicely. Alas, it shrunk the hat so that it didn't fit me anymore. Well, it does fit 8 year old Sophie nicely and wears it all the time. I made a punchcard of the entire Aspen leaf pattern for the tunic and used only the first pattern repeat for this hat. Gauge 18 st x 33 rows = 10 x 10 cm on Tension 2.2 Cast on 84 st. with waste yarn on tension 2 and knit a few rows. Change to main colour and knit 13 rows. Move every other stitch to the adjacent needle and knit one row.Change tension to 2.2.Knit 13 rows. Unravel waste yarn and pick up cast on stitches for picot edge.Knit one row to bind picot edge. Carriage on left side: insert punchcard, choose KC for selecting needles and knit one row. Carriage on right side:insert contrast colour, and change tension to 3. (You might ad a small 2 row border motive here, I forgot) Knit 22 rows (complete Aspen leave motive) Knit 2 rows main colour. Knit 2 rows of small border motive. Change to tension 2. Knit 2 rows main colour. Pick up all stitches with a circular needle and handknit decreases knitting in the round: Decr. every 13th and 14th sts. knit 1 row. Decr. every 12ht and 13th sts* Knit 1 row Decr. every 11th and 12th sts. a.s.o. Matress stitch open edge. Soak the hat and dry it in the washdryer. Watch out for shrinkage and take the hat out while still moist. Shape the hat and let it dry.

In this article my Sarah Lund look-a-like sweaters are being mentioned. A good reason to show another Sarah Lund sweater I made. This was my first one, the one I made for my daughter in law Stephanie. This was the try-out version for the motive and it appeared that it had long floats. For Thomas'Sarah Lund cardigan I made a small alteration in the motive chart.

Here are my knitting directions. The original motive is copyrighted by Gudrun&Gudrun and I had to make adjustements anyway to fit the motive in a 24 punchcard. So I made my own variation of the motive. For an improved version of the punchcardmotive look here. This is a combination of machine knit (straight parts) and handknit raglan yoke, borders and finishing. Yarn: Ístex Létt-Lopi, 10 skeins = 1090.0 yards (996.7m)of Colorway light heather grey and: Ístex Létt-Lopi, 2 skeins = 218.0 yards (199.3m)of Colorway bright blue Both purchased at Astrid's Dutch Obsessions Brother 260, Tension4 Front , back and sleeves knit flat. Then joined them for a handknit circular yoke with raglan shaped decreases. I used the instructions from the Lopi book number 27, pattern 18 Nost. Joined sleeves, front and back and decided to knit raglan shaping instead of evenly spaced decreases as usual with circular yokes. I couldn’t manage to make the decreases fit with this large motive. Designing a motive for machine knitting is not easy: this one has very long floats on the backside of the fabric. I had to sew them afterwards. I made a lining for the neckband to prevent the wool from itching.

Sophies Icelandic sweater

We didn't have a real winter in The Netherlands yet, so I didn't think of knitting my granddaughter a warm sweater. Apart from that I was afraid the Icelandic Lett-Lopi wool I used for her parents sweaters, would be too scratchy for her delicate skin. When her dad told me however that the doctor had said that Sophie needed to be dressed warmer, and winter was eventually starting here, I decided to knit her a real Icelandic sweater. No need for ordering Lett-Lopi as I had a lot of leftovers from my Kedja dress. The nice warm red colour would suit Sophie well. Here is how I made her sweater. I chose the Él pattern from the Istex Lopi no. 27 book. That pattern is knit in Plötulopi however, so I used the stitchcounts and directions from another pattern in that book, called firildaslo. That went beautifully. I sent off the sweater today and I really hope it will fit her and will not be too scratchy. She best wears a longsleeved t-shirt under the sweater. Now I'l have to wait for reports and pictures!

Angry bird tea cozy

My youngest son Jasper lives on his own since last summer and asked for a teacozy. I made him an Angry Black Bird lookalike one.

Here is how I did it.

I used some bulky black leftovers to knit this hatlike teacosy. The rolling hem allows fitting for different sizes of teapots. Teacosy would fit a childs head as a hat. Can easily be knitted by hand of course.

Knit on my Brother 260, tension 4.
CO 60 st. and knit 50 rows of stocking stitch.
Decreases:
move EOS to the adjacent stitch and knit 1 row.
Knit 2 plain rows. Repeat until a few st. are left. Thread yarn through remaining stitches. Sew back seam.

Decorate using felt, buttonds and fleece fabric for eyes and beak.

Sarah Lund mannenvest

Sorry, description and instructions in Dutch! I hope to translate them later, promised!

Mijn zoon Thomas wilde graag een Sarah Lund vest hebben. Sarah Lund is de hoofdpersoon in de Deense crimiserie Forbrydelsen / The Killing.

Ik maakte een door de echte Sarah Lundtruien geïnspireerde ponskaart voor het motief.
De delen zijn gebreid op de Brother 260, de boorden en de raglanpas zijn met de hand gebreid op een rondbreinaald. Het voorpand is na het breien doorgeknipt en er is een rits ingezet.

Maat: L.
Garen:Istex Lett Lopi in de kleuren 005 zwart (10 bollen) en 0056 grijs 3 bollen).
Rondbreinaalden: voor de boord: 3,5 mm, voor de pas 4 mm.


*Voorpand en achterpand.*

Boord: opzetten in d.grijs 96 st met pen 3,5.
Brei 7 cm in boordst: 1 verdraaid r, 1 av.
Overzetten op grofbreier Brother 260. Brei 2 toeren d.grijs.

* Brei vervolgens ponskaartmotief over 17 toeren.
Brei donkergrijs over 20 toeren.* Herhaal van * tot * nog een keer.
Brei nog een keer ponskaartmotief en brei effen tot 110 toeren vanaf boord.
Zet aan weerszijden 6 st op een hulpdraad en haal het pand van de machine met een hulpdraad.

*Mouwen (brei 2):*

opzetten 44 st. met pen 3,5 en brei 7 cm: 1 verdraaid r, 1 av.
Overzetten op de grofbreier en meteen 4 st meerderen. Brei 2 toeren effen d.grijs.
Meerder vanaf hier aan weerszijden 1 st in elke 8e toer, totaal 12x tot een totaal van 72 st.
Brei tegelijkertijd 3 x het ponskaartmotief, zie foto. (totaal 109 toeren vanaf boord).
Zet aan weersz. 5 st op een hulpdraad en neem het werk van de machine.

*Rondgebreide pas.*

Zet alle steken op een rondbreinaald no. 4: 292 st, plaats een stekenmarkeerder bij de 1e st van linkermouw, voorpand, rechtermouw en achterpand. Hier wordt geminderd voor de raglan. Brei de raglanminderingen in elke 2e toer als volgt: Vóór de st.markeerder: 2st samenbr. en nà de st. markeerder 1 st afhalen, 1 st.r en afgehaalde st over de gebreide st heenhalen.
Brei nu aan de achterkant 4 shortrows, brei dan weer rond tot een totaal van 13 toeren effen (geteld aan de voorkant).

Dan het patroon inbreien. Brei het patroon steeds tot 2 st voor de stekenmarkeerder en begin ook weer 2 st na de st.markeerder.
Brei na het patroon weer effen verder tot een stekenaantal van 100. Brei dan weer 4 naalden shortrows aan de achterkant. Hierdoor wordt het achterpand langer dan het voorpand en krijgt de trui een betere pasvorm. Brei nu weer rond verder en minder tot een totaal aantal steken van 84.

*Nekboord:*

schakel over op rondbreinaald 3,5 mm en minder tot er nog 76 st. zijn. Brei verder in boordst. 1 verdr.r., 1 av.tot een boordhoogte van 3 cm. kant soepel af.

*Afwerken.*
Open naadjes onder de oksels sluiten en alle losse draadjes afhechten.

middenvoor markeren en in de stekenrij links en rechts daarnaast met de naaimachine 2 rijen kleine rechte steken naaien (geen zigzag!). Knip het breiwerk door tussen de 4 rijen steken.
Neem langs de afgeknipte randen steken op en brei een randje. Rijg de rits erin en naai hem vast.
